Reflexology

Reflexology is female only at Precious Room Therapies

Origins

Reflexology originated from Ancient Egypt. In about 2330 BC, the tomb of Ankmahor was built in Saggara, Egypt. On this tomb, was inscribed a picture of four men and a phrase in hieroglyphics above the picture. Two men are thought to be giving Reflexology to the two other men on the picture. The hieroglyphics record the men receiving the treatment requesting for it not to be painful. Those giving the treatment reply that they would respect their wishes. Also, foot reflexology was used in India, China and North America.

Later on, in the 1900's AD Eunice Ingram - "The Mother of Reflexology" came on the scene. She was a very popular and influential figure in the story of reflexology and was the person responsible for developing all the techniques included in Reflexology today! In addition, she discovered the theory behind reflexology and is also well known for the detailed Reflexology foot charts she compiled. She published two books, and her reflexology techniques have been taught far and wide, all over the world.

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a complementary therapy which also works on the basis of a holistic approach. The holistic approach means that a certain therapy treats the body as a whole. It works on the basis of getting a picture of each individual person as a whole, and taking everything into account - how the whole body is working, rather than just targeting specific parts of it or isolated "symptoms".

Reflexology comprises of applying pressure to different areas of the feet - called reflexes. This pressure isn't too light that it is "ticklish", but rather is a medium, firm, gentle and comfortable pressure. There are various reflexology techniques which are used to work the reflexes and massage the feet. The feet mirror the body, and so by applying pressure to the reflexes of the feet, this helps to unblock any imbalances in the body, this in turn helps the body to heal itself naturally. Reflexology helps to restore the body's internal environment back to normal.. Interestingly some of the reflexes of the feet can correspond to more than one part of the body.

Why Reflexology?

Benefits of Reflexology

Reflexology is a gentle, non-invasive therapy, and it can have a variety of benefits. By massaging the reflexes in the feet, this can help to rebalance the body systems, therefore helping the body to heal itself naturally. Other benefits that reflexology can have are:

  • Stress relief

  • Relief from tension and anxiety

  • Mood improvement

  • Better sleep

  • Help to improve health and well-being

In addition, reflexology can make you feel very relaxed. Relaxation can have many positive benefits for your body such as: boosting energy, reducing pain, relaxing muscles, helping skin conditions and improving memory. It can help to lower blood pressure, keep our heart healthy, and therefore help to reduce the risk of heart conditions. Relaxation can also help us to clear our mind, and therefore help us to deal with situations better. Stress is very prevalent in today's society, and can be the cause or contributing factor to many illnesses. Therefore, anything such as reflexology or massage which helps the body to relax is very beneficial to the body, to promote good health and well-being, so we are better able to deal with the stresses of daily life. Generally, relaxation helps body systems such as the circulatory, digestive, immune and respiratory systems to function more efficiently.
